F-16XL #849 shows off its unusual “cranked arrow” double-delta wing platform during a functional check flight to check out its newly installed digital flight control system in this 1997 photo. The aircraft, one of two prototypes modified from the basic F-16 configuration by manufacturer General Dynamics Corp. for an Air Force strike fighter competition, was flown by NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, CA, to investigate characteristics of sonic booms and the aerodynamics of the cranked-arrow delta wing configuration from 1989 through 1997.
