The Block 1 cargo configuration gives NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) the unique capability sending more than 26 metric tons (57,000 pounds) to the Moon. The solid rocket boosters produce 75 percent of the thrust to launch the vehicle. The core stage’s four RS-25 engines continue to operate until the vehicle reaches Earth orbit, operating around 8.5 minues. The interim cryogenic propulsion system on top of the rocket fires one RL10 rocket engine to continue the journey to deep space.
