Journal Help Page

This Journal is a constantly changing document which changes on a daily basis and evolves with some of the latest advances in World Wide Web technology. This help page will give you all the information you need to know on how to best explore the journal using this new technology as well as providing links to external sites where you can get the appropriate software to view the latest features.

The Journal is a framed site so you will need Netscape 2.0 or Explorer 3.0 or higher to fully explore the pages of the journal. The best way to navigate round the journal is to use the menu frame (on the left) to allow you to easily move from mission to mission, section to section. To get quickly to the main index page click on the home page link at the top of this menu at any time. Sometimes you may want to go back to a previous page: In older browser versions, don't be tempted to use the back button, but hold down the mouse in the main (large) frame and this will bring up a pop-up menu that will let you go back to the previous page. Netscape 3.0 users do not need to do this and CAN use the back button. We have added a targeting feature which will allow images and movies etc...to be loaded in a new browser window, so you can go on reading the text while the media loads, or can easily refer back and forward to text and media for easy comparisons.

We are constantly adding new multimedia features to the site including images, movies and sounds. You will need to get appropriate plug-ins or helper software to listen/view these features. For video, we suggest you download a copy of the latest Quicktime plug-in version and for Audio, the live audio plug in. The sites to download these from are all listed below.

We are currently adding RealAudio and RealVideo to allow us to simultaneously hear and see some of the original transmissions whilst reading the journal and comments from the Astronauts. RealPlayer G2 is required to play the latest video clips.

RealPlayer Tip

RealPlayer G2 can be downloaded for free. Mick Hyde has provided a screen shot of the non-default settings appropriate for G2 version 6. Readers using the older version, Real Player 5.0, who are having trouble even with the older clips, should try the following procedure:
