Flag, Ladder, and Laser Reflector
The laser reflector is an array of 'corner cubes' which, when properly
positioned on the lunar surface, can reflect short laser pulse back to
Earth and allow a very accurate measurement of the distance between the
telescope that sent to pulse and the reflector. The three arrays
left on the Moon - one each by the Apollo 11, 14, and 15 crews - have
provided invaluable data for the study of such things as plate
tectonics on Earth and the General Theory of Relativity. As of
2009, they are still in use.
