 
Michael C. Martirone
 
Michael C. Martirone is a social studies teacher at Egg Harbor Township 
High School in New Jersey. Known for his hands-on classroom style and 
cross-curricular lessons, Martirone creates an energetic and creative 
learning environment with the goal of increasing literacy and developing
 citizenship among his students.  This year, Martirone and other County 
Teachers of the Year
co-founded PD on Wheels in order to establish a support network for 
teachers in their professional growth and to provide skills necessary to
 develop teacher leadership.  He has been awarded over $4,000 in 
education grants and his innovative learning methodologies—from 
creating and implementing an annual academic challenge competition for 
the freshman class to hosting his “Are you smarter than a Freshman?”
 preparatory trivia game—engage parents and the community in his 
students’ learning journey as 21st century problem-solvers, “why 
study history?” Martirone asks, “when you can make it.”  Martirone
 is a finalist for the 2016 Princeton University Distinguished Teacher 
award and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.  Before teaching, Martirone earned 
his B.A. in Political Science from Stockton College and his M.A. from 
Rowan University.
