Dr. McComas is Assistant Vice President of the Space Science and Engineering Division, at the Southwest Research Institute. Previously he served as the Director of the Center for Space Science and Exploration at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has 30 years experience in developing flight hardware, with nearly 25 of those in various instrument and mission leadership positions as well as numerous line and program management positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Southwest Research Institute. His broad-based technical leadership includes serving as the Principal Investigator on NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) and Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers (TWINS) missions as well as being Principal Investigator for six instruments on other NASA and DOE space missions. Dr. McComas is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, American Geophysical Union and American Association for the Advancement of Science, holds six patents, and has authored over 450 refereed publications, which have been cited over 17,000 times, covering a wide range of research across space physics, including heliospheric, solar wind, coronal, magnetospheric, cometary and planetary topics, as well as numerous space flight instruments, missions, and techniques.
