    Experiment Description

    Research Overview

    • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Education Payload Observation 5 (JAXA EPO5) includes artistic experiments and cultural activities. JAXA implements these activities to enlighten the general public about microgravity utilization and human space flight. JAXA understands that International Space Station (ISS), Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), Kibo, is useful for scientists and engineers as well as writers, poets, teachers, artists, etc.

    • The JAXA EPO 5 demonstrations are downlinked, edited, and used to support cultural resources for the general public.


    The objective of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Education Payload Observation 5 (JAXA EPO 5) investigation uses materials in the microgravity environment of the ISS/JEM to create multimedia products and artistic works that inspire the general public. The products will be exhibited at the museums. Each ISS Expedition involves different on-orbit activities and themes. The JAXA EPO5 activities are as follows:

    • Message in a Bottle plans to create a unique communication interface between space and Earth, as well as present and future humankind. During a extra vehicular activity (EVA) , a small cylinder is filled with Space. This investigation provides a chance for the participating astronaut to create a memento of his or her time in space but also a message for people on Earth. Once the “Message in a Bottle” is brought back to Earth and placed in people's hands, it will become a conduit between humans and space, and between this world and the one beyond us.     JAXA EPO 5 introduces the next generation of explorers to the environment of space.

    Research performed in Kibo onboard the ISS will contribute to developing a global citizenry, expanding the future of mankind through space exploration.

    Operational Requirements

    JAXA EPO5 does not require power, telemetry, or specialized hardware. However, each demonstration requires a few hours from crewmembers, who will operate the video/camera equipment and perform demonstrations.

    Operational Protocols

    After setting up the activity, one crewmember will perform the activity. Each activity will have its own props (e.g., water, clay). The activity is then returned to stowage. After the objects and the video/imagery is returned to Earth, they will be used to create artistic products for distribution to the general public.
