Science Objectives for Everyone
The Pilot Study with the Crew Interacitve MObile companioN (Cimon) is a technology demonstration project, and an observational study, that aims to obtain the first insights into the effects on crew support by an artificial intelligence (AI), in terms of efficiency and acceptance during long-term missions in space. Spaceflight missions put the crew under a substantial amount of stress and workload, and it is thought that AI could provide operational support to crew members.

Experiment Description

Research Overview

The Pilot Study with the Crew Interactive MObile companioN (Cimon) assists crew members with the following:
  • Crew activity/maintenance: Cimon can facilitate and improve efficiency of a crew activity or a trained maintenance task if feasible. The astronaut can work freely with both hands while having voice controlled access to documents and media in their field of view.
  • Science support/experimentation: complex science tasks would benefit from onsite video documentation of a procedure. Cimon can function as a mobile camera to document the procedure for either live or retrospective analysis. Cimon should be used to support crew in the execution of the procedure.
  • Motor skills learning/skill training: it is hypothesized that Cimon can speed up the performance of a motor skills task.

Applications

Space Applications
The duration of manned space missions has expanded over the last decade. The trend is going towards deep space missions while the facilities inside the spacecraft, as well as the activities for the crew, become more and more complex—putting the crew under substantial stress. Cimon can assist the crew carry out more tasks, allowing more time for relaxation, and reduction of stress during flight.

Earth Applications
Terrestrial applications for the Cimon technologies are expected in education, Industry 4.0 processes, medicine and health care.

Operations

Operational Requirements and Protocols

Cimon accomplishes the following:
  1. Support for assisted crew activity/maintenance (Cimon shall support the crew during a scheduled educational experiment [e.g. EPO-Flying classroom 2]).
  2. Documentation of complex science tasks (Science Support): Cimon shall support a science team during a science task performed by the crew (TBD).
  3. Training of specific motor skills (Skill Training): Cimon shall support the participating crew member during a time limited motor skill task (a Rubik’s cube). Cimon displays a video instruction instead of a paper-based manual. Verbal commands are used to pause, rewind and restart the video tutorial to facilitate the activity.
