Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) Launch Blog

Atlas V rocket, with the RBSP spacecraft atop, stands ready at the launch pad.
NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission, known as RBSP, began with a thundering liftoff aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. Launch occurred at 4:05 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30, 2012. A pair of identical spacecraft loaded with scienitific instruments will follow each other through the Van Allen radiation belts around the Earth to gain unprecedented knowledge about the region.

We provided detailed countdown coverage from Cape Canaveral, Fla., as the mission got under way.
