Pine Island Glacier - Crack in the shelf

One of the regions NASA scientists are eager to re-visit in 2012 is the large, long-running crack across the Pine Island Glacier (PIG) Ice Shelf. This photo was taken from on board NASA's DC-8, which flew over the PIG on Oct. 14, 2011. The area beyond the crack that could calve covers about 310 square miles (800 square kilometers).
