England, Scotland and northern Ireland
Dry weather conditions sparked fires to burn in parts of England, Scotland and northern Ireland as seen (as red dots) in this image, taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. The image shows conditions on May 2, 2011 at 11:50 UTC (7:50 a.m. EDT).
According to The Guardian, in the Scottish Highlands, firefighters tackled wildfires, which have been raging since the weekend. Hundreds of acres of land are being destroyed, and homes and livestock threatened, said news reports. Weather forecasters have said there is very little chance of rain to alleviate the blazes over the next day. Hundreds of firefighters have been working nonstop to control the fires.
