California’s County Fire Still Threatening

County Fire seen by Aqua
Unfortunately the 2018 fire season has not been kind to the wine country as the County Fire began in Yolo/Napa County on June 30, 2018.

Last year California’s wine country was ravaged by wildfires. It was called the Northern California Firestorm. That firestorm was a series of 250 wildfires that started burning across the state of California beginning in early October 2017. Of the 250 wildfires, 21 of the wildfires became major fires that burned at least 245,000 acres. Unfortunately the 2018 fire season has not been kind to the wine country as the County Fire began in Yolo/Napa County on June 30, 2018. So far 88,375 acres have burned in this blaze and the fire is only 37% contained. Over 100 structures are still in the path of the fire and 9 structures have already been destroyed. The cause of this blaze is still under investigation. Steep and inaccessible terrain has created difficulty for firefighters along the northern portion of the fire. Higher temperatures, lower humidity and winds are expected to return over the next few days which could contribute to fire spreading. There are mandatory evacuations in place and those can be found on the CA Fire webpage.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on July 05, 2018. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red. The dark red-brown area that falls in between the red hot spots is land that has been burned out.
