Narrow Window of Opportunity
The large rock on the local horizon is labeled '1110' on the
post-flight map. It is about 90 meters north of Station C' and is
on the southeast rim of Cone Crater. In hindsight, a simple Sun
compass and some computation aide from Houston might well have solved
the navigation problems Shepard and Mitchell experienced in their
search for Cone Crater. Such a Sun compass was flown on Apollo
15, as a back-up to the Rover navigation system, and was checked out by
Dave Scott during the SEVA.
