On January 31, 1958, The United States successfully launched Explorer 1, designed and built by Dr. William Pickering's team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Launched by Dr. Wernher von Braun's rocket team, the spacecraft carried a small scientific payload that eventually discovered the magnetic radiation belts around the Earth, named after principal investigator James Van Allen. This interactive feature about Explorer 1 contains a 3D model, video footage, and a photo gallery. Built using Adobe Flash, it is inaccessible to the visually impaired.
