Jonathan Van Noord — Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences researcher at the University of Michigan — calibrates CYGNSS, December 12, 2014.

CYGNSS is a device that researchers are building in hopes of launching into space in 2016 that will be able to prove the ability to measure the strength of hurricanes. The device uses GPS signals bounced off of ocean surfaces to measure the height of waves to help measure wind speeds. Researchers hope that the collection of data will eventually help meteorologists in predicting hurricanes.
