Webb telescope's NIRSpec in a NASA Goddard clean room
Uncovering NIRSpec

Once engineers secured NASA's Webb telescope's Near Infrared Spectrograph or NIRSpec, onto its dolly in the clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., they removed blankets that help protect the instrument from contamination. NIRSpec uses infrared light to analyze the physical properties and chemical composition of distant galaxies, stars and planets. NIRSpec was provided by the European Space Agency and built by EADS/Astrium. Webb is an international project led by NASA with its partners the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
