NASA Invites Twitter Followers to Participate in Budget News Conference
For the first time, NASA is inviting 20 of its Twitter followers to join reporters for the budget news conference. Tweeps interested in being a part of this event and asking questions can sign-up online. Registration will be open for 24 hours beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Selected participants will be notified on Friday, Feb. 10.

Tweeps will have the opportunity to participate alongside media representatives in NASA's news conference outlining the budget in the afternoon on Monday, Feb. 13, in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E St. S.W., Washington. During the news conference, NASA also will take as many questions as possible submitted via Twitter using the hashtag #askNASA.

Registration for the event is open to @NASA followers from 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Feb. 8, until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9. NASA will select 20 total participants via a lottery from those who register online.

What is a tweetup?
A Tweetup is an informal meeting of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity in Washington, D.C.

How do I register?
Registration opens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, and closes at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9. NASA will accommodate a total of 20 Twitter followers selected via lottery from those who sign up. NASA also may place some registrants on a waiting list.

Do I need to have a Twitter account to register?
Yes. This event is designed for Twitter users who follow @NASA and other NASA Twitter accounts. The goal is to allow people who are regularly engaged with the agency the opportunity to ask questions as citizen reporters during an agency news conference.

What are the registration requirements?
Registration indicates your intent to travel to NASA Headquarters in Washington and attend the event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, accommodation, food and other amenities.

To be admitted, you will need to show a government-issued identification (driver's license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. Registrants must be at least 18 years old.

Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?
For this event, you must be a U.S. citizen to participate.

Does my registration include a guest?
Because of space limitations, you may not bring a guest. Each registration provides a place for one person only (you) and is non-transferable. Each individual wishing to attend must register separately.

What if I am not selected or cannot come to Washington, D.C.?
If you cannot come to NASA Headquarters to attend in person, you do not need to register for the Tweetup.

During the news conference, NASA also will take as many questions as possible submitted via Twitter using the hashtag #askNASA. The news conference will be broadcast on NASA TV, available online at and on mobile devices via the NASA app available at

If you can't make this Tweetup, don't despair; NASA is planning others in the near future at various agency locations.

When will I know if I made it?
After NASA has received and processed the registrations, an email with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those selected and any placed on a waiting list. We plan to send notifications on Friday, Feb. 10.
