In January 1967, the Saturn V instrument unit, the “brains” that controlled the giant launch vehicle was hoisted during the final assembly of the first Saturn V launch vehicle in the Vehicle Assembly Building high bay at the Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The Saturn V launched the Apollo 4 mission, an unmanned test flight to obtain data on launch vehicle and spacecraft structural integrity, stage separation, and subsystems operation including testing of restart of the S-IVB stage, and to evaluate the Apollo command module heat shield. The Apollo 4 was launched on November 9, 1967. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. designed the instrument unit, which was built in Huntsville by International Business Machines (IBM), the prime contractor for the instrument unit.
