Center Director Honored at YWCA Women of Distinction Ceremony

On July 1, Center Director Lesa Roe was honored, along with 12 other distinctive women at the 3rd Annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony held at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News, Va. Roe was recognized under the category for Science and Technology, representing a science professional who has achieved distinction in her field for scientific advancement. Other categories honored included Business and Finance, Arts and Entertainment, Communications, Education, Government and Politics, Human Services and Non-Profit, Law, Medicine, Military, Racial Justice and Civil Rights, Religion, Volunteerism, and Young Woman of Distinction (under age 30). The event included an awards ceremony, silent auction and reception for the honorees and invited guests.

The YWCA Virginia Peninsula serves as an advocate and resource to the community on issues that impact women, and has been a source of devotion, support and empowerment for hundreds of women and young girls in the community. The YWCA draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
