RELEASE NO. 97-035

Note to Editors:

A top NASA official will be available Friday, May 16, to discuss the agency’s new vision for aeronautics and space transportation technology.

Dr. Robert Whitehead, associate administrator for the Office of Aeronautics and Space Transportation Technology, will meet with media from 11:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.

Whitehead will discuss the “Three Pillars for Success” recently adopted by NASA. The document is a new blueprint for achieving national priorities in aeronautics and space transportation.

Briefly, the Three Pillars are:

  1. Global Civil Aviation: make dramatic improvements in safety, environmental compatibility, and affordability of air travel.
  1. Revolutionary Technology Leaps: overcome barriers to high-speed travel, revitalize the U.S. general aviation industry, and develop next-generation design tools and experimental aircraft.
  1. Access to Space: make access to space significantly more affordable and reliable.

Copies of the color-illustrated “Three Pillars for Success” booklet are available for those interested in more detail.
