JSC to Provide 45 Reading Tutors to Support Governor Bush’s Education Initiative

NASA's Johnson Space Center is developing a comprehensive program to support Governor George W. Bush's focus on reading by providing 45 JSC employees to serve in the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) as reading tutors at Hall Elementary School.

"The Johnson Space Center has pledged to Governor Bush our strong support of his literacy initiative for the youth of Texas," said JSC Center Director George W. S. Abbey. "Tutoring the children at Hall Elementary School is one of several components of our support to enhance the reading skills of children in Texas."

Since the beginning of the 1997-98 school year, 12 JSC employees have provided reading and math tutoring for 14 at-risk students at Hall Elementary School. In January 1998, the school identified additional students who would greatly benefit from one-on-one reading tutoring. In response to the need for more tutors, JSC's Education Outreach Program recruited another 45 employees to serve as reading tutors.

In order to improve student performance at Hall Elementary School, JSC reading tutors will meet with the students on a weekly-basis during school hours.

The 45 JSC reading tutors will attend a Volunteer Orientation Session hosted by Hall Elementary School on Wednesday, February 11, 1998, from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Hall Elementary School is located at 5931 Meadowside in League City, Texas.

JSC's support to reading will continue to grow in the 1998-99 school year with a similar reading program at CCISD's Stewart Elementary School in Kemah, Texas.
