Battery Systems

The Battery Systems Test Facility houses the test systems used for performance and safety evaluations of batteries and battery systems.  Numerous thermal and thermal-vacuum (up to 8-foot diameter) chambers provide space environments for rigorous space environment testing. Typical testing includes cell chemistry evaluation, charge and discharge performance, over charge and over discharge characterization, impact and internal short tests, operate-to- failure, battery dissection and failure analysis.  Batteries and battery systems for Space Shuttle and Space Station are evaluated, qualified, acceptance tested, and maintained for mission support and crew training.
