Every January thousands flock to the World of Pets Expo at the Maryland Fair Grounds, which this year was held on January 25 through 27. This event for pet lovers offers folks a chance to not only try new products, eat yummy food, and watch canine agility trials, but also provides animal rescues a voice to help them find forever homes for animals in need.

Goddard employee Susan Hendrix admits to being an avid dog lover and volunteers with two local Shetland Sheepdog rescues in her spare time doing home visits for the rescues and providing temporary foster care for incoming Shelties. How does she find the time?

"It's easy for me to make time for animals in need," Hendrix said. "I find it very rewarding knowing that the rescued dogs are getting a second chance, a happy forever home."

Hendrix recently started training with another group called Fidos For Freedom and is in training to become a "dogless" handler, one who takes another trained therapy dog on visits to hospitals and nursing homes.

"I enjoy volunteering, giving back to my community, and will continue to do so well into retirement," she said.
