Public Invited to NASA Glenn for Launch to Make International Space Station Home Improvements
CLEVELAND -- The Visitor Center at NASA's Glenn Research Center invites the public to view the nighttime launch of space shuttle Endeavour. The first launch opportunity is Friday, Nov. 14, with liftoff targeted for 7:55 p.m. and the Visitor Center will extend its normal hours of operation until 8:30 p.m. that evening.
During the STS-126 mission, big changes will be made to the International Space Station, both inside and out. Endeavour will carry about 32,000 pounds, which will include supplies and equipment necessary to turn what is now a three-bedroom, one bath house into a five-bedroom, two bath house with a gym. Additionally, Endeavour will carry the Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR) and the Multi-User Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA) and five space experiments, all of which were designed and built at Glenn.
The astronauts also will have four busy days of spacewalks to perform extensive maintenance on station's Solar Alpha Rotary Joint. This will ensure the station can generate the power required by the enlarged crew quarters.
If the launch is delayed, visitors can go online at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
