Student Teams to Test Robotics Skills at Annual Tournament
MOFFETT FIELD, Calif.- Twenty seven middle and high school teams will test their engineering and programming skills at the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics (KPIR) 2007 Northern California Botball Tournament on Saturday, April 21, 2007. The competition will be held at the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., with seeding rounds starting at 10 a.m. PDT. News media and the public are invited to attend the tournament. Admission is free.

When: Saturday, April 21, 2007
What: Northern California Botball Tournament
Schedule: 10 a.m. PDT- Seeding rounds
1:30 p.m. PDT- Double elimination rounds
Who: 27 middle and high school robotics teams from 21 Bay area and northern California schools.
Where: The Leavey Athletic Center at Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, Calif.

For the 2007 game scenario, teams are tasked with preparing their 'island' against an impending eruption from a nearby volcano. Robots are programmed to harvest pineapples, compost leaves and place rooftops on houses. Mid-way through each round, robots are to clear lava, in the form of small pompoms, which is released to random positions on the playing field. Unlike most robotics competitions, robots are pre-programmed to start, stop and perform their tasks without the aid of remote controls.

For directions or interview requests, call Jenny Grigsby at 405-921-9612 or Jonas Dino at 650-207-3280.

The tournament is presented by the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics, Norman, Okla., in conjunction with Santa Clara University and the NASA Robotics Alliance Project (RAP) at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., and other partners. The Robotics Alliance Project supports Botball and other robotics competitions with logistics support, team mentors and team sponsorships.
