4. What is the pH of the Rio Tinto river in Spain? (1:15 minutes)
Dr. Carol Stoker: "The pH of the Rio Tinto river is runs around about two. And normal water pH is about five, and very alkaline water or like seawater is a pH of about eight. And very, very alkaline water like the water in Mono Lake has a pH of about 10. So, this water is as acidic as Mono Lake water is alkaline. In fact, chemically speaking what pH really is about is how much free hydrogen is in the water. So, there is a lot of free hydrogen in this water. Umm, it really isnt so nasty that you cant like get it on your skin, or it wont actually burn your skin. So, its a difficult environment to live in for the average organism because most types of biological tissue would be dissolved. So, acid really dissolves tissue. So, you wouldnt want to like keep it on your skin for very long, but for short exposures it wont its not really dangerous."
