Carbon nanotubes and graphene-based sensors are being developed for strain and damage detection. These sensors have potential for use as minimally invasive, low power systems for integrated health monitoring and damage detection in composite structures.

We are focusing on maturation and integration of selected sensors for use in composite structural health monitoring and damage detection. Specific activities include:

  • Identification of optimized sensor approaches (sensitivity, reliability, durability)
  • Development of schemes to integrate sensors into composites – power distribution, signal output
  • Fabricate and test composite panels with integrated sensors – accuracy, sensitivity, long-term performance
