Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama on October 17, 1956. She was the youngest of three children. When Mae was three, she moved to Chicago, Illinois.

Mae liked science when she was young. She was a very good student. Mae went to college when she was only sixteen. She studied hard and got two degrees. She became Dr. Mae Jemison.

Dr. Jemison became an astronaut in 1987. She flew on the Space Shuttle in 1992. Dr. Jemison became the first African-American woman into space.

Dr. Jemison is a great jazz dancer. She also likes the theater. Some of her other hobbies are photography and skiing.

In 1993, Dr. Jemison resigned from NASA.
