Major Completed Actions

NASA completed all awards of Science, Exploration, Cross-Agency Support, and Aeronautics contracts and cooperative agreements in accordance with applicable Program Plans and Recovery Act provisions, and more than 78% of funds appropriated have been disbursed for those projects.

Exploration: At Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), power start up of the Horizontal Integration Facility was completed. At Stennis Space Center (SSC), the tug boat cooling line modifications were completed ahead of schedule, as well as completion of tug boat testing.

Science: Operation ICEBridge (OIB) presented several well received papers at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) regarding the Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM). The International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project (ICECAP), a combination of three projects - a United Kingdom / National Science Foundation funded International Polar Year project to improve the boundary conditions of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS), a NASA Operation Ice Bridge project to monitor the dynamics of the EAIS, and a University of Tasmania Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE-CRC) project to improve our understanding of the Totten Glacier region, completed five science flights; obtaining surface elevation changes on the active Byrd Glacier catchment lake district, extending the record of surface elevation change on David Glacier and the Dryglaski Ice Tongue, and extending the record of surface elevation change at Cook Ice Shelf.

Aeronautics: At Ames Research Center (ARC), all testing was completed for the evaluation of sonic boom measurement test techniques, as well as completing all testing in the ARC 9x7 Wind Tunnel (WT). At Langley Research Center (LARC), building structural deflection and stress analysis have been updated and completed with actual geometry of Traverse Support Beams and Crane Rail for the 14x22 WT Traverse Mechanism Design.

Cross-Agency Support for Hurricane Damage Repair Projects at the Johnson Space Center (JSC): NASA continues to support a performance audit on the Cross-Agency Support JSC Hurricane Repair activities which began on August 31st.

Planned Actions

Exploration: Over the next month, the WFF Horizontal Integration Facility will be completed; the SSC LOX barge refurbishment continue, as well as the return of the tug boat from refurbishments. The CCDev Nevada Dream Chaser engineering test article structure proof testing and the Paragon Air Revitalization System engineering development unit integrated ground test & final report are scheduled for mid-December.

Science: The Airborne Microwave Observatory of Subcanopy and Subsurface (AirMOSS) radar performance trade study, mechanical configuration and GeoSAR antenna performance, will continue through January.

Aeronautics: ARC replacement of desiccant materials in the air dryer vessels will be completed in December, as well as Phase 1 construction items on the PSL Ice Crystal Capability Project at GRC. Supersonics at GRC, fabrication of the wind tunnel models and test planning will continue.

Cross-Agency Support for Hurricane Damage Repair Projects at the Johnson Space Center (JSC): Completion of the Hangar E280 project is anticipated in December.
