NASA Invites Public to March Hubble 25th Anniversary Events

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope celebrates 25 years of science this April 2015 with a variety of events open to the public. Here is a sampling of events happening this month; some events charge admission.

Starting this week, the public is invited to participate in Hubble Mania and vote for their favorite Hubble picture online in a single-elimination bracket. The champion will be crowned on April 6. For more information, visit: http://hubble25th.org/go/hubblemania.

On March 7, a Big Table event featuring Hubble will be held at the Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Drive, Baltimore, Maryland. For more information call 443-573-1700.

On March 7 and 8, the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, led by John Hopkins University (JHU) Music Director Jed Gaylin, will give a performance at JHU Homewood’s Shriver Hall, 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The program involves composer Russell Steinberg’s “Cosmic Dust” and includes Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor with soloist Clipper Erickson. Mario Livio of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) of Baltimore, Maryland, will give a pre-concert talk about Hubble on March 7 at 7 p.m., and Dr. John Grunsfeld, NASA Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate and Hubble astronaut, will give remarks. The HSO performs Cosmic Dust twice at JHU Homewood’s Shriver Hall: at 8 p.m. ET on March 7 and at 3 p.m. ET on March 8 in the 22nd Annual Concert for Children and Families. From March 13 through the 17 at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas, there will be a NASA exhibit in the Interactive Trade Show that will feature Hubble content.  On March 15, at 5 p.m. CT (6 p.m. ET), there will be an Interactive Festival Panel  called “Hubble: Touching the Universe,” featuring Dr. John Grunsfeld Astronaut and Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. On March 26, Astronaut Mike Massimino will be participating in the Exploring Space Lecture Series at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. New Hubble images will be installed in the museum in April. For more information visit: http://airandspace.si.edu/.

On March 28, an Anniversary event will be held at the Visitor’s Center at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Speakers will include Hubble scientist Jennifer Wiseman and Hubble Servicing Mission 4 photographer Michael Soluri. On March 29 at 2:30 p.m. ET, the public is welcome to attend a multimedia song cycle composed by Fay Chiao of the Peabody Institute, called To See the Stars. The event will be held at the Maryland Science Center’s Davis Planetarium, 601 Light Street, Baltimore, Maryland. For more information, contact the museum at 410-685-2370.

The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and ESA (European Space Agency). NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore conducts Hubble science operations. STScI is operated for NASA by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., in Washington.
