NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will host this month’s Sunday Experiment on April 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. This free event is intended for elementary school-aged children and family members. The activities are an amalgam of science and engineering disciplines.
In a nod to Earth Day, celebrated this month, Goddard’s Environmental Team will demonstrate the engineering and science of managing stormwater on our properties to minimize the impact of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. Learn how native plants and rainscaping minimize our impact on the environment.
“Even small actions on everyone’s part can amount to a big difference in the environment,” said Darlene Squibb, environmental protection specialist at Goddard.
Also recognized this month is Take Your Child to Work Day. As a way to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the Space Public Outreach Team ambassadors will present shows developed by Goddard and composed of publicly available space-themed content, trivia questions and other opportunities for audience interaction.
Inspired by his work in the Environmental Testing Facility at Goddard, Bill Chambers combines his love of magic with engineering. Wonder how he does it? A good magician doesn’t tell his secrets! But he will share his illusions and how they relate to engineering feats from the James Webb Space Telescope.
This month’s activities focus on non-traditional science and engineering, broadening the introduction of Goddard’s capabilities and accomplishments. The Goddard Visitor Center welcomes the public to share this experience.
The Sunday Experiment – usually held the third Sunday of each month from September through May with some exceptions – spotlights Goddard’s world-renowned science and engineering. Families leave inspired by the activities, wowed by the scientists and engineers, and excited about Goddard’s revolutionary research and technology.
