A color drawing illustrates the telemetry flow between the
Deep Space Network (DSN) on Earth, the Mars Odyssey and Mars
Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars orbiters, and Mars Exploration
Rover(MER) as it descents to a landing on Mars. It shows MER
communicating with DSN by X-band link as it descends to the
Martian surface. After landing, the Rover also exchanges data
with Mars Odyssey and MGS via UHF radio, and the two orbiters
exchange data with DSN via X-band.
