Karen M. Meinert is the Chief of the Knowledge Management Sysems Office (KMSO) at the NASA Safety Center (NSC), located at NASA's Glenn Research Center (GRC). Meinert leads a team responsible for Agency Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) knowledge management and information sharing, NSC IT operations, management and hosting of the Agency Knowledge Now virtual collaboration system, safety data analysis, and contract management of the Agency Incident Reporting Information System.
Currently, Meinert is serving as the Acting Deputy Director of the NSC. In this position, she works with the Director to enable more effective and efficient SMA support for NASA's portfolio of Programs and Projects by managing the NSC's activities in knowledge management, technical excellence, mishap investigation support, and audits and assessments.
Prior to her role leading KMSO, Meinert was the Software Assurance Technical Discipline Team Lead at the NSC where she led the development and implementation of the software assurance curriculum for the Agency SMA Technical Excellence Program.
Meinert began her career in the System Safety Office at NASA's Lewis Research Center in 1987 where she performed software assurance and participated in the Agency Software Management and Assurance Program Steering Committee.
Meinert also held positions as the Manager for the WP-04 flight software independent verification and validation effort for the Space Station Freedom Program, Production Software Manager for the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation project, Center Technical Lead for the NASA Accounting and Financial Information System project, and Lead for developing and implementing the GRC Business Management System and for achieving International Organization for Standardization 9001 Quality Management System certification. Additionally, Meinert served as the Chief of the Enterprise Applications Office in the Office of the GRC Chief Information Officer. In this position, she was responsible for supervising Web application development, business applications operations, and knowledge management and collaborative technologies implementation.
Meinert has a wealth of leadership, software engineering and software product assurance experience. She has received numerous individual and group achievement awards including the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal in 2001 and 2012, and the GRC Federal Women's Program Supervisory Award in 2006.
Meinert has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Cleveland State University.
