Components of the NESC

The structure of the NESC is based on maintaining a diverse and broad base of knowledge, keeping informed and engaged with each Center and the Agency’s major programs, responding efficiently to requests for assistance, and retaining a high degree of independence. To achieve these goals, the NESC is organized into six offices:

Principal Engineers (PEs) use Technical Discipline Team members provided by the NASA Technical Fellows and those resources arranged by the NESC Chief Engineers to lead technical reviews, assessments, tests, and analyses.

The NESC Chief Engineers (NCEs) are resident at each Center. They provide insight into the Center’s programs and help to coordinate the facilities and resources of each Center when required for the support of the NESC.

Office of the Director is the management/leadership team for the NESC. The Office of the Director also chairs the NESC Review Board (NRB).

The NESC Review Board (NRB) approves requests for independent assessments and also approves the final documentation for all independent reviews, special studies, proactive proposals, and other formal analyses performed by the NESC. The NRB, chaired by the NESC Director, is a formal board that brings a diversity of thought to the decision-making process as it is a combination of people representing different Centers, programs, and engineering backgrounds. All technical decisions made by the NESC are products of the NRB.

NASA Technical Fellows are NASA’s senior technical experts. They assemble and provide leadership for the Technical Discipline Teams as such they sponsor discipline-enhancing activities and educate the Agency.

The NESC Integration Office (NIO) handles requests as they come in, performs proactive trending analysis and problem identification, and provides other integration and system engineering support.

The Management and Technical Support Office (MTSO) provides innovative, solution-driven business expertise in accomplishing the mission and objectives of the NESC. Serves as the administrative arm of the NESC and presides over the business responsibilities of the NESC by taking care of contracting, budgeting and management of the NESC’s infrastructure.

Under the leadership of the Director’s Office, these six components come together to form the core of the NESC. In a concerted effort, all components support and remain committed to the premise on which the NESC was founded — engineering excellence.
