Oglala Lakota College

Headquartered at the Piya Wiconi campus of Oglala Lakota College, NASA's Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy provides math and science enrichment activities for students at participating schools throughout the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations in South Dakota, the Wind River Indian Reservation of Wyoming and the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota.

The project utilizes a science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM-focused curriculum support materials that were developed by NASA and features a collection of hands-on, inquiry-based, K-12 STEM curriculum enhancement activities. Each activity is grade appropriate and aligned to national science, math and technology standards.

As part of the project, participating students will conduct research in the NASA Aerospace Education Laboratory, or AEL, a state-of-the-art, electronically enhanced, computerized classroom that puts NASA technology at the fingertips of area middle and high school students. Working in pairs, students will staff ten unique research workstations inside the AEL that have been carefully designed model real-world challenges in aviation and reduced gravity research. Working collectively, these students will use actual aerospace hardware and software to gather the essential data necessary to plan and complete a simulated cross-country flight or a mission to the International Space Station.

In addition to the hands-on curriculum enhancement activities and the AEL, the project also features a portable planetarium that is used to teach astronomy throughout the state.
