GEORGE DILLER: In the predawn hours on November 10, 2007, the doors to the massive Vehicle Assembly Building opened to reveal space shuttle Atlantis.

Resting on top of the mobile launcher platform, the shuttle made its slow and steady 3.4-mile journey over the crawlerway to reach Launch Pad 39A.

The trip took about six-and-a-half hours, with first motion at 4:43 a.m.

The shuttle stack, traveling at less than one mile an hour, was secured on the pad at 11:51 a.m. and is now poised for launch on mission STS-122 to the International Space Station.

From NASA's Kennedy Space Center, I'm George Diller.
