Space shuttle Endeavour left the Vehicle Assembly Building in the middle of the night on April 17 on what is to be the last trip by a shuttle to NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39B.

Secured by eight bolts to a launch platform NASA calls a mobile launcher, Endeavour was pointed to the sky as a crawler-transporter moved it about four miles over a track built to support the crawler’s immense weight.

Atlantis is poised on Launch Pad 39A awaiting a targeted May liftoff on a flight to service NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Endeavour will stand by on its launch pad in case it is needed for an unlikely rescue mission if Atlantis suffers a problem in space.
