Spirit Rises to the Challenge

Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) played Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” late Thursday night, as they watched new images confirming that Spirit has successfully stood up on its lander. The move is a major step in getting off of the lander and beginning to rove on the martian surface. This image from the rover’s front hazard avoidance camera (hazcam) shows the two wheels on the bottom right and left are locked into position, along with the suspension system. The martian landscape is in the background. With a deflated airbag partially blocking one exit route, engineers will decide whether Spirit should use a different route to roll off the lander.Photo Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell+ Photo Animation of Spirit Standing Up+ Explore Mars: Interactive Color Photo+ Complete Mars Exploration Rover Image Collection+ View Spirit’s First Photos
