BIOGRAPHY
Norris Gray

Former Fire Chief and
Emergency Services Officer
Cape Canaveral Launch Area, Florida


Norris Gray was born in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1920 but grew up in Tampa, Florida. He served in the U.S. Army 9th Infantry from 1940 through the duration of the World War II as Chief of Section Artillery, serving in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Belgium and Germany.

After the war, he served as a civil servant at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla. then at Anniston Ordnance Depot in Ala. He was then transferred to the Joint Long Range Proving Ground as the Fire Chief and Emergency Services Officer for the Cape Canaveral Launch Area.

He joined NASA in 1963 in the Fire Protection arena, eventually becoming an Orbiter Subsystems Manager before retiring in 1984. He has continued as a volunteer in NASA Public Affairs and has served as President and on the Board of Directors of the NASA Alumni League.
