Program Introduction and Welcome
Joe Dezio: Hi, I'm Joe Dezio, Swift project manager. Thank you for tuning in to NASA's webcast for the Swift mission.
Like fireworks in the sky, gamma-ray bursts are brilliant explosions of energy that originate at random points in the universe. These energetic bursts are spectacular in nature, and last only a fraction of a second.
At the moment, researchers do not know where gamma-ray bursts come from or what triggers them. The Swift mission is a project designed to answer these questions by detecting gamma-ray bursts within moments of their appearance.
With Swift, scientists will have a nimble spacecraft with fast reflexes to observe these cosmic powder-kegs the instant they are visible.
Once again, thank you for tuning in today, and I hope you enjoy the Swift webcast.
