› Watch video

ISS Update commentator Amiko Kauderer interviews Jeffrey Miller from the U.S. Forest Service inside Mission Control Center. It is the 68th birthday of Smokey Bear who has been promoting fire safety and prevention through the message, "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires."

Miller talks about his love of the environment and why he decided to work for the U.S. Forest Service. He works in Alaska helping manage 193 million acres and 155 national forests and grasslands across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Miller is friends with astronaut Joe Acaba, Expedition 32 Flight Engineer, and gave him a Smokey doll. Acaba later took the Smokey doll into space as his mission’s talisman aboard a Soyuz spacecraft.

Miller and Acaba have partnered together to promote science and technology exchange, conservation and environmental awareness. This also includes combustion science in microgravity and views of fires on Earth from space.
