Mycological Evaluation of Crew Exposure to ISS Ambient Air - 2 (Myco-2) evaluates the risk of microorganisms' via inhalation and adhesion to the skin to determine which fungi act as allergens on the ISS.

    Experiment/Payload Description

    Research Summary

    • Myco-2 samples will be collected from the nasal cavity, the pharynx and the skin of crew during preflight, in flight and postflight focusing particularly on fungi which act as strong allergens in our living environment.

    Description

    It is well known that a living and working environment in the ISS has been progressively contaminated by a number of microorganisms from the beginning of construction. These microorganisms can possibly cause serious life-threatening diseases and allergies if human immunity is compromised.
