Launch Weather Officer





Clay Flinn, a member of the 45th Weather Squadron at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., is the Atlas Program Launch Weather Officer at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. He serves as Chief Weather Forecaster for all Atlas Program operations and is responsible for planning, monitoring and leading all Atlas weather support. As the Launch Weather Officer, his responsibilities include total weather support integration into prelaunch operations, launch countdown simulations, final terminal countdowns, and post-launch data analyses.

Clay has held this position since July 2004. He served as a Meteorologist, Missile Combat Crew Commander, and Acquisition Program Manager while on active duty in the Air Force from August 1975 to August 1996. He taught physics in high school from August 1996 to May 2002 and was the Weather Squadron's program manager for integrating new weather instrumentation from May 2002 to July 2004.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from The Citadel in 1975, completed the Air Force Institute of Technology's Basic Meteorology Program at St. Louis University in 1976, and earned a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1985.
