Presenter 1: Eric Christian, Program Scientist (portrait)

Dr. Eric Christian is the program scientist for the Solar Terrestrial Probes program at NASA Headquarters, and is also a program scientist for STEREO, ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer), IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer), RBSP (Radiation Belt Storm Probes) and the two Voyager spacecraft. His scientific background is in energetic particles (galactic cosmic rays, anomalous cosmic rays, and solar energetic particles) and the design, construction, integration, and test of particle detectors. Before coming to NASA Headquarters in 2002, he was deputy project scientist for ACE and had worked on Voyager and a large number of sub-orbital balloon experiments. He has also been active in education and public outreach for his entire career. Dr. Christian has a B.A. in physics and astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Presenter 2: David McComas, Principal Investigator (portrait)

Dr. David J. McComas is senior executive director of the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute. He currently serves as principal investigator of the IBEX and Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers (TWINS) NASA missions. He has published more than 340 refereed papers on various space physics topics, including coronal, solar wind, heliospheric, magnetospheric, cometary and planetary science, as well as numerous space flight instruments, missions, and techniques; he also holds six patents. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Presenter 3: Steve Fuselier, IBEX-Lo Lead Investigator (portrait)

Dr. Stephen Fuselier is the senior manager for the Space Physics Department at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center. Fuselier is applying his expertise in space plasma physics as the lead investigator of the IBEX-Lo instrument, which is designed to measure energetic neutral atoms from 10 eV to 2 keV. He has served as a co-investigator and project manager on the Low-Energy Neutral Atom and Far Ultraviolet imagers on the IMAGE mission and the ROSINA instrument on the Rosetta mission. He has published more than 200 papers on the magnetosphere, shocks, and interplanetary space.

Presenter 4: Nathan Schwadron, IBEX Co-Investigator (portrait)

Dr. Nathan Schwadron is an associate professor of astronomy at Boston University and the science operations lead for the IBEX mission. For more than a decade, he has provided a broad range of innovative theoretical discoveries, interpretations, and models of heliospheric phenomena related to the solar wind, the heliospheric magnetic field, pickup ions, cometary X-rays, energetic particles, and cosmic rays. Dr. Schwadron is a team member of the Ulysses, Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), and New Horizons missions and participates in the interpretation and analysis of these science data, as well as observations from Wind and the Cassini mission to Saturn. He is currently a lead organizer for the New England Space Science Consortium. Dr. Schwadron received a B.A. with honors in physics from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan.

Live Launch Day Webcast

NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission is scheduled to launch October 19 at 1:48 p.m. EDT. Adler Planetarium and the IBEX mission is hosting a webcast for museum audiences that will include educational interpretation, activities, interviews, Q&A, and more. The webcast will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT. You may also choose to participate in a live chat/Twitter commentary during the webcast.
