Meet Dr. Ramesh Kakar: Weather Focus Area leader for the NASA/Science Mission Directorate
Dr. Ramesh Kakar is the Weather Focus Area leader for the NASA/Science Mission Directorate programs. He is the Manager for the Atmospheric Dynamics / Precipitation Programs and the Program Scientist for the very successful Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Aqua satellites. He is the Program Scientists for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission which is currently in formulation.
In his present position, he serves as a nationally recognized expert in the area of satellite observations of meteorological parameters. He specializes in the use of active and passive remote sensing at microwave and infrared wavelengths for these observations. He has played a leadership role in the development and very successful implementation of the TRMM satellite and the AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) instrument on the Aqua satellite. He has led NASA participation in several field experiments including the Tropical Ocean Global Atmospheres/Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE); the Convection And Moisture Experiment (CAMEX) series of field missions; the Kwajalein Experiment (KWAJEX); and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment (TRMM-LBA).
Dr. Kakar earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 from the University of Delhi, India, and a Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Wyoming in 1970. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Texas Tech University until 1973, and a National Academy of Science Research Associate on tenure at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) until 1975. He was a member of the Technical Staff and Manager for Atmospheric Research at JPL until 1990. Dr. Kakar has been a civil service employee at NASA Headquarters, Washington, since 1990. Dr. Kakar received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal in 2002 and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2006
