The Country Fire Authority of Australia is concerned that three fires burning in Grampians National Park since Thursday the 14th could merge into a single front at the southern tip of the park, placing farms and other Mirranatwa properties at risk. The fires are being fueled by hot weather and a shifting northwest wind. Fires have been burning through the national park since Thursday, when a series of lightning strikes hit the area.
In Alpine National Park there are upwards of a dozen bushfires burning which are all under advisement by the Country Fire Authority. None are threatening communities at this time.
This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on February 18, 2013. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red.
