Australia has had its share of fires this season and has the scars to show for it. In this natural-color satellite image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on October 13, 2012, both the actively burning areas outlined in red and the dark scars from fires that have already ravaged the area (near arrows) can be seen.
The NASA fire gallery has many other images of the Australian fire season this year. This image shows the area just above Lake Woods on fire on October 6, 2012. This image shows a longer range image of the fire scars that dot the Australian landscape. It was taken on September 18, 2012.
