Fires in Labrador, Canada

Many wildfires continue to burn in Labrador, Canada as seen in this image taken by NASA's Aqua satellite on June 23, 2012 at 16:45 UTC (12:45pm EDT/U.S.) The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) detected the heat signatures in red.

More than 1,500 people were told to evacuate on the 23rd from North West River and Sheshatshiu (top left in the image) due to thick smoke, according to CBC News. Sheshatshiu is an Innu Federal Reserve, located approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Goose Bay.

On June 25, the Canada Department of Natural Resources recommended the evacuation order be lifted.. Labrador has had dozens of wildfires over the past three weeks due to dry conditions and abnormally warm temperatures for the area. Labrador's Department of Natural Resources has banned outdoor fires around forested areas.
