SOFIA Observatory at NASA Dryden for Flight and Ground Tests

The NASA-DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy 747SP dwarfs a ground crewman as it taxis to a stop on the flight line at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The aircraft was flown to the base from the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif., March 14 for both pilot proficiency and to conduct light and heavy gross weight ground turns tests. Another flight will focus on additional flight envelope clearance with the telescope door open and additional reduced vertical separation minimum test points.
