This image is an artist's concept of a view looking down on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The spacecraft is pictured using its Shallow Radar (SHARAD) to "look" under the surface of Mars.

The SHARAD instrument will seek liquid or frozen water within the first few hundred feet (up to a kilometer) under the martian surface.
